Sofia Coppola Denies Report That She Will Direct Her First Opera.
U.S. filmmaker Sofia Coppola has denied a recent announcement by the Montpellier Opera that she is scheduled to direct an upcoming production there.
French media reported last week that the 35-year-old director, whose films include Lost in Translation (2003) and Marie Antoinette (2006), would stage a production of Puccini's Manon Lescaut, starring Roberto Alagna, at the Opéra de Montpellier during the 2009-10 season.
The announcement was reportedly made at a press event for the 2007 Festival de Radio France de Montpellier, which is directed by René Koering, who is also music director at the Opéra de Montpellier.
However, Coppola's spokesman denied the report yesterday, saying in a statement (quoted by AFP) that "She has no knowledge of nor has she agreed to direct a production there."
Coppola, the daughter of U.S. filmmaking legend Francis Ford Coppola, began her movie career appearing in his films, including the Godfather trilogy, Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club and Peggy Sue Got Married.
